A part of Teignbridge Propellers’ plans for future research and development the company will be investing in the construction of a high speed boat for testing advanced propeller and drive systems.

This will not exclude Teignbridge from using shore based test facilities where appropriate but it will provide a facility where testing can be undertaken at sea in accordance with the company’s and customer’s requirements. This is thought to be the first time that a propeller manufacturer has invested in a high speed test boat for this purpose.

The building of this Teignbridge Propellers research and test vessel will be started soon and in addition to being available for Teignbridge R&D it will also be made available for interested companies to use it for their own product development and evaluation. The Company currently has a number of patents registered for marine propulsion products that are under development which will be refined and tested with the help of this research vessel.

Teignbridge Propellers hopes in the very near future, to be able to develop, demonstrate and introduce more cost effective and efficient propulsion products to add to its range and to better serve the marine industry. Teignbridge Propellers was created by and is still led by design engineers with the company currently employing eight marine design engineers within the team. The company has a background of successful innovations that have now become industry standards.

“This new test vessel will be principally for supporting the development and testing of propulsion systems including high speed propellers.” commented Mark Phare, the sales and marketing director at Teignbridge. “It will also be used to test pod drive systems including electrical and mechanical design concepts.”

Teignbridge works in close collaboration with the marine research company Duncan Research and Development Ltd (DRD), which is independently funded. DRD developed the very successful high performance and efficient C-Foil propeller design that has been shown by Newcastle University in trials to be 80% efficient. Comparison with traditional propeller designs indicate an increase in efficiency of up to 5% can be achieved with the C-Foil design. This increase in efficiency directly translates to fuel savings of the same magnitude, so it offers a considerable potential saving to vessel operators. The C-Foil design is not a complicated propeller shape, therefore Teignbridge are able to supply this advanced high performance propeller at a similar price as a standard propeller.
