Custom Propellers

A custom propeller is designed for a specific vessel and engine combination to enable that vessel to achieve its optimum performance. The criteria for optimum performance usually refers to maximum speed but can also relate to other operational requirements as stipulated by the naval architect or the vessel operator, such as low noise and vibration. In assessing the requirements of a custom propeller, a study is carried out and the hydrodynamic and cavitation characteristics are checked using 'Lifting Surface Theory'- the most advanced calculation tool available.

Once the propeller has been sized for diameter, DAR and blade number, the propeller blade geometry such as pitch distribution, blade thickness, skew, camber and blade profiles are optimised in the design to maximise performance. This process is carried out using specialised computer software that can simulate the vessel's performance using different propellers.
